Ways to Honour and Remember Your Baby

There are pictures of Arran all around our house. He has his own little space where we keep his ashes and all the things that are special to us because of him. We light a candle for him every single day.

For Arran's first birthday, we made up some gift bags which contained a paint your own gnome, a paint your own butterfly sun catcher, a candle and some sweet treats.

We got up really early in the morning and placed them around the town for people to find. Campbell, Ben and I then went out for breakfast and had family and friends come over in the afternoon. This is a tradition that we will continue each year in memory of our precious little boy.

Arran's Auntie, Uncle & cousin, gifted us a little bench with a plaque marking Arran's 1st Birthday. It was the most perfect gift.

Memory Gift Bag

Last year at Christmas, our first without Arran, we decided to buy a stocking for him.

Ben wrote a letter to his brother and placed it in the stocking on Christmas eve. When he woke on Christmas morning the letter was gone and a special little gift was left from Arran.

This is another tradition that we will continue together as a family to remember and to include Arran.

Christmas Stocking

With the help of other bereaved parents, I have put together some ways in which you can honour and remember your baby. Do what feels comfortable to you and don't allow anyone to tell you or make you feel that what you are doing is wrong.

  • Light a candle
  • Plant a flower or tree
  • Name a star after your baby
  • Get a personalised piece of jewellery with their name or their hand or foot print engraved
  • Write letters to your baby or keep a journal of things you wish you could say to them
  • Do a random acts of kindness in memory of your baby and invite family and friends to do it too
  • Use an item that belonged to your baby or a photo of them when taking family pictures
  • Order a weighted bear, made to the same weight as your baby
  • Do a butterfly or dove release on special dates.
  • Write their name in the sand
